A broker from a neighboring state, not familiar with the Montebello condominium community called me to ask if Montebello was handicap-accessible. He has a client who is confined to a wheelchair who needs easy access to the Metro in order to get to work and to other places.
Yes, it is, was my reply. In fact, Montebello prides itself on being a very ADA-compliant community.
In addition to easy access to the elevators from the garage level, the Montebello shuttle bus has hydraulic lift accommodations for disabled riders and upon request, will pick up a rider from the B3 garage level so they do not have to make their way to the front of the building where the shuttle normally stops. So, all a resident has to do to get on the handicap-accessible Montebello Metro shuttle is come out of their unit and take the elevator down to the proper garage level, press the automatic door opener and take the ramp out to the pick up stop. It is a very thoughtful design for anyone with limited mobility.
In addition to taking residents to the Huntington Metro station, the shuttle also runs to area stores for resident errands and shopping, making stops at 3 different grocery stores, Wal-Mart and Old Town Alexandria.
There are ramps throughout the Montebello community, as well as automatic doors. There is also a chair to assist the disabled into the lifeguard-attended swimming pool. Even the bowling alley in the community center has a bowling assist device.
If you are looking for an amenity-rich community which is also handicap-accessible, definitely check out Montebello. This is one community that is very sensitive to the needs of all of its residents.
