It has looked a lot like Christmas in our office recently; piles of food and grocery items have been stacked high in the hallways, awaiting pick up by the United Community Ministries truck as we at Long & Foster’s Old Town Alexandria Historic Office help replenish the UCM food pantry. With the struggling economy, more and more families depend on the services of UCM just to get through the month.
In case you didn’t know, UCM is one of the largest providers of human services in our area, supporting local families and communities with a variety of help. They provide
- Immediate help for people in crisis (this could take the form of food, financial aid or counseling);
- Services such as preschool, transitional housing, parental education and employment services;
- Community services such as neighborhood centers with after school programs and leadership training.
That the Long & Foster Old Town Alexandria office chose to donate so generously to the United Community Ministries Food Pantry – more than $5,000 was donated by office staff and agents to make this possible – is no surprise to those of us affiliated with Long & Foster, as the company has a long history of community service.
We have agents who regularly tutor at local schools and we are a regular collection site for Toys for Tots at Christmas.
And speaking of Christmas, that’s when our office really shines. Every year, we adopt more than 50 families identified by local schools as deserving of a little extra help. You should see the offices during Christmas…rooms are packed with toys, books, clothing and bikes…whatever it takes to bring smiles to the faces of some of Alexandria’s less fortunate children on Christmas morning. Our agents are more than generous, too, when it comes to providing for these families, who also receive grocery store gift certificates and Christmas dinner.
Our local seniors aren’t forgotten during the holidays, either; agents and staff donate toiletry items, which are used to fill stockings for senior residents of a local home for the aging.
So, in addition to helping people buy and sell homes, we also give back to the community in a variety of ways. That is just one of the reasons I’m proud to be a Long & Foster agent!
