As if there is not enough going on during the holidays in Old Town Alexandria itself, right across the river from Old Town is National Harbor, which is a whole other world of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and holiday fun. And from Old Town, getting to National Harbor is half the fun on the Alexandria to National Harbor Water Taxi.
You can come into Old Town on the Metro, get off on King Street, then walk to the riverfront or hop on the Old Town Trolley and get off at the waterfront. Of course, if you would rather drive, there are plenty of convenient garages and parking lots, too.
Mark your calendars for November 23 from 6:00 – 8:30pm and come see the lighting of more than 200,000 lights on the 65-foot Christmas tree at National Harbor, to the holiday sounds of the Chesapeake Orchestra. After the lighting, the festivities will draw to a close with a spectacular fireworks finale and light show.
The tree lighting is just the beginning of the holiday fun and excitement at National Harbor, from the Harbor Holiday Festival to the wildly popular ICE! Winter Holiday Attraction, returning this year with an all new event featuring Dreamworks’ Shrek the Halls.
Every Friday night between Thanksgiving and Christmas, between 5 – 9pm, there will be Friday Night Family Fun and Fireworks. And on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, you won’t want to miss Waterskiing Santa, who will be joined by the Jet Skiing Grinch, flying elves and Frosty the Snowman, all performing on the Potomac River. It’s riveting fun for the entire family.
From the wide diversity of shops and eclectic boutiques – yes, I admit, my favorite store is the Peeps Store – to dozens of popular restaurants, there is something for everyone at National Harbor.
